If you are a Yoga Teacher or a lover of Yoga…. you probably were celebrating this week when the American College of Physicians published groundbreaking clinical guidelines for the treatment of chronic pain. The paper,  Noninvasive Treatments for Acute, Subacute, and Chronic Low Back Pain: A Clinical Practice Guideline From the American College of Physicians.

Simply put….. Yoga, exercise, massage, et al and non-pharmaceuticals (nix the opioids!) were found to be the best practice in the treatment of low back pain. Why is that? Well, the study goes on to say ….”Given that most patients with acute or subacute low back pain improve over time regardless of treatment clinicians and patients should select nonpharmacologic treatment….”

In real life, we will likely tweak our backs now and then.  It is just the nature of movement that at times could be awkward or unplanned.  A 40-something High Tech Deskworker comes to my Lunchtime Chair Yoga class and he told me that he threw his back out playing with his young kids. After a long day at work, the kids came running up and wanted to rough house.  So he did some bending, twisting and lifting the kids and yep, you guessed it…..he tweaked his low back.  He said it took him about 2 months of stretching and doing Yoga to get his back feeling normal again.

Now, we are talking simple, daily Yoga movements to ease the tightness and tension that comes with low back pain. Yoga does not have to be super active, hot and sweaty, or pretzel-like. Here are over 30 short videos to give you a feel for the simple and powerful practice of Yoga for your low back. Browse through to see if some of these speak to you!
